Remotely Operated Radiation Tolerant
Underwater Camera and Inspection Systems
for the Nuclear Power Industry

R.O.V. Technologies Inc.

Exclusive Services

R.O.V. Technologies, Inc. is a recognized leader in the nuclear power industry for innovation in design, manufacture, and operation of remote operated vehicle and inspection systems.

Our position in the market is reinforced by our extensive list of exclusive services that we offer.  These services are in place to allow our staff of nuclear professionals to be available 24/7 – and our on-site NRC licensed RCA facility and radioactive material shipping license allow us to mobilize for emergent situations within hours of the initial call.

Our exclusive services are outlined below.

Emergency Service is Available 24 Hours a Day, 7 Days a Week, 365 Days a Year

As our industry operates in a 24/7 environment, we understand that it is imperative to respond to customer’s emergency requirements as they emerge.

R.O.V. provides 24/7 Emergency Service for our customers’ emergent situations.  Our equipment and technicians can be mobilized within hours of the initial call - day or night, 365 days a year.

Our equipment can be mobilized at any time of the day or night, as we have DOT licensed, hazmat drivers on our staff as well as arrangements in place with outside contract carriers and couriers.  Our technicians are also ready to mobilize at any moment.  We can offer this service because our technicians are full-time, R.O.V. employees, not contract employees.

Radiation Control Area (RCA)

RCA Our RCA is over 26,000 square feet in size.  Just over half currently serves as storage space.  The RCA allows us to store and refurbish our robotics equipment rental inventory, along with our customers' equipment.  Sophisticated software allows us to track all items in the inventory as well as each item’s maintenance history.

Our RCA Allows us to Provide the Following Services:

  • Shipment of LSA equipment by DOT licensed contract carriers and DOT licensed, hazmat R.O.V. drivers and vehicles.
  • Pick up and delivery of customer LSA equipment for repair or calibration; eg:  cameras, meters, robotics, etc.
  • Rebuilding and/or repair of customer LSA electrical, electronic and mechanical equipment, motors, pumps, etc.
  • Pick up, characterization, delivery, and storage of outage equipment; eg:  scaffolding, hand tools, drills, saws, etc.

Radioactive Materials License:

RCA

In 2004, R.O.V. Technologies, Inc. applied to the NRC for and received a Radioactive Materials License.  This license allows us to receive, ship, store and work on contaminated equipment; both our own equipment as well as customer owned equipment.  Due to our growth, the NRC has since amended this license twice for us so that we could further expand our services to our customers.  At this time, our license allows us a maximum of 5 curies on site.

Radiation Safety Officer (RSO):

RCA

Our full time Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) has authored all of R.O.V.'s procedures to provide guidance and direction to the Radiation Protection Technicians (RPT’s) and our robotic/electronic technicians that work in the RCA.

RSO Responsibilities:

  • Supervision of the RPT’s
  • All Shipping And Receiving Operations
  • All Aspects Of NRC License Compliance

Manufacturing

The uniqueness of our products and their rigid design specifications, as well as our 24/7 emergency services program required a deliberate decision to become vertically integrated*.  Vertical integration allows us to control our entire process from both quality and delivery standpoints.

*  A vertically integrated enterprise is one in which different stages of production, which are usually carried out by different enterprises, are carried out in succession by different parts of the same enterprise (the output of one stage becomes an input into the next stage, only the output from the final stage being actually sold on the market).

In House Machine Shop:

Machine Shop

We have a comprehensive machine shop, staffed by full time machinists.  Our equipment includes all necessary machinery to manufacture our products, including mills, lathes, grinders, saws, sanders, drill presses, arbor presses, and a sheet metal shearer and bender.

Welding and Cutting Center:

Welding is an important part of our manufacturing process.  Our welding center is outfitted with all the necessary equipment required for the manufacture of our products.  This center is also available for repair of customer equipment, as well as for creation of mockups and simulated environments for our R&D work.  Our cutting center is capable of processing aluminum, stainless steel and carbon steels.

Product Assembly:

Electronics Electronics

All R.O.V. standard and customized products are assembled and function tested in our assembly area.  We build our products “from the board up”, including all crawlers, submersibles, control consoles, and associated cabling.

Mockups/Simulated Environments

Mock up of INVADER Another benefit of our vertical integration is the capability to build structural components and mock-ups to simulate various environments in which our equipment will operate.

The capability to prove out a potentially difficult or sensitive inspection or retrieval in our simulated environment affords both R.O.V. and our customers a feeling of confidence as all the trial and error occurs in a controlled and safe environment.  We can “work the bugs out” before going live.

Mockups/Simulated Environments Are Used For:

  • Research & Development
  • Technician Training Aids
    • Operator Training
    • Skill Assessment
    • Proficiency Testing
    • Manual Dexterity Performance Evaluations
  • Customer Demonstrations of
    • Equipment Access
    • Inspections
    • Retrievals
    • Numerous Other Tasks

Some of our Mockups/Simulated Environments:

  •   A jet pump supported in a reactor vessel annulus cross sectional fixture complete with a steam dam and core spray header used for development of annulus inspection systems.

  •   An 80,000 gallon wet cavity/vessel mockup used primarily for our operator training and proficiency testing on our myriad of underwater vehicles. Test Tank Test Tank

  •   An under head mockup used for development of equipment for guide funnel inspection and welding.

Custom Mockups/Simulated Environments:

We routinely build custom mockups/simulated environments to suit our customers' specific applications.

Consulting / Technical Services

R.O.V. employs career nuclear professionals.  Many of our employees have over 30 years in the industry, and have been intimately involved in both plant construction and Health Physics.

Some of Our Consulting Services:

  • Administration and implementation of robotic programs.
  • Robotic / surveillance equipment consultation.
  • Outage / project engineering and management.
  • Procedure writing and technical reviews.
  • Repairs and/or upgrades to various camera systems at customer facilities or at R.O.V.’s facility.
  • Repairs and/or upgrades to various customer owned robotic devices either at customer facilities or at R.O.V.’s facility.
  • Radiation Protection.

Trained Field Technicians - Our Full Time, Dual Role Employees

Through the utilization of our mockups and 80,000 gallon test tank, our field technicians receive regular training on equipment operation and troubleshooting.  Training is a very important part of R.O.V.'s mission.

RCA The field technicians who operate our equipment at customer sites are our mechanical and electrical engineers, machinists, welders and electronics assembly technicians when they are in house.  They are truly dual role employees.

We require and our customers expect that our field technicians fully understand our equipment – and we believe that our dual role philosophy ensures highly qualified technicians at customer sites.  We believe this philosophy also makes them better mechanical and electrical engineers, machinists, welders and electronics assembly technicians when they are back at R.O.V. – they understand how the equipment must perform in the field and the environments in which it must function.

We feel that this is a very significant advantage for us and for our customers, in that we provide the “best of both worlds":  the highest quality field technicians and field-experienced product developers, engineers and manufacturing personnel.
